Taser used in her arrest

Butler police say they nabbed a woman Saturday night after she bailed out of a truck and ran off, throwing away bags of suspected crack cocaine and heroin in her would-be getaway.

Officers arrested 31-year-old Jessica H. Hilliard but not before they deployed a Taser and struggled to get her in handcuffs.

Police later found separate baggies containing 8 grams of crack and 34 stamp bags that she allegedly tried to discard, according to court documents.

District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned the defendant, who police believe is homeless, on a felony charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and possession of a controlled substance.

She is being held in the Butler County Prison on $50,000 bail.

Hilliard also was wanted on a bench warrant for failing to appear at a parole revocation hearing Feb. 13 in connection with a 2014 drug case.

Police said while checking on a complaint for a possible break-in at a home in the 400 block of West Diamond Street shortly before 10 p.m., they noticed a pickup truck with its engine running in a nearby alley.

Two people were in the front seats of the truck. Police recognized Hilliard as the passenger.

While approaching the pickup, police Lt. Brian Grooms noticed Hilliard with what appeared to be a baggie in her left hand, according to court documents. The officer thought she was trying to hide the baggie in the glove box.

Moments later, the defendant got out of the pickup and ran east on Bortmas Street toward South Chestnut Street.

While she ran past a Dumpster, police said, she threw something into the large trash bin, documents said. Grooms chased Hilliard for two more blocks and into a yard, where she was unable to make it over a fence.

Police Sgt. Jeremy Walter ordered the suspect onto the ground but she refused and again tried to escape. Walters subsequently deployed his Taser but it had no effect, documents said.

Police took the woman to the ground but she continued to resist. The officers eventually put her in handcuffs.

Grooms went back to the Dumpster where he found two baggies — one with crack and the other with heroin.
