It was a tight game at the half, but a quick start in the third quarter propelled the A-C Valley girls basketball team to its first playoff win since 2001-02 with a 44-36 victory over DuBois Central Catholic Friday night.

Ellie Thompson scored 21 points to lead the Falcons to the District 9 1A quarterfinals.

A-C Valley (14-7) will play No. 1 seed North Clarion next week at a site and time to be determined in the semifinals.

The Falcons led 17-14 at the half, but opened the third quarter on a 10-2 run to give themselves some breathing room.

DuBois Central Catholic crept closer in the fourth quarter, but A-C Valley held on for the biggest win in program history in 14 years.

Kylee Eaton added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Falcons.

Omar Coker scored 17 points and Kyree Gholston added 15, but Summit Academy couldn't keep up with Bishop Canevin's outside shooting barrage in an 85-54 loss in the second round of the WPIAL 2A playoffs.

Bishop Canevin hit 15 3-pointers in the win.

Summit Academy stayed close in the first quarter, trailing 16-14 after the first eight minutes, but couldn't keep up.

Butler's Abby Kyle bowled a high game of 212 and a 578 series to place eighth at the WPIBL Girls Singles Championships Thursday at Princess Lanes.

Allison Bruce of Mars was ninth with a 233-572. Butler's Ashley McCue was 11th with a 222-570. Also finishing among the top 25 were the Golden Tornado's Jordyn Grahm (14th, 197-561), Mercedes Belch (17th, 193-550) and Nicole Nebel (21st, 199-546).

Knoch's Chelsea Cimbala (181-532) finished 26th.

Meghan Christman of Plum rolled a 263-654 to finish first overall, then won the playoff for the individual title.
