Immigration's legacy

There is one issue that is in the forefront of my mind regarding politics today. How has the far right been able to convince Christians to be against foreigners and refugees?

The immigration policies of the Trump administration are clearly at adds with the teachings of the Bible, which tells us to welcome the foreigner and give food, drink and clothing to those who are thirsty, hungry and in need.

There are many, many problems with politics in America today, but this is one I think we can fix. I know the people of my community have good hearts and want to live according to their Christian values.

We can call and e-mail our representatives and senators and tell them that even though we voted for Trump we disagree with Trump’s immigration policies. We don’t fear immigrants, we welcome them. Our ancestors were immigrants, whether one, two or three generations ago. We know that immigrants who come to this country looking for a better life make us a stronger nation.

Our nation owes a debt to the agricultural workers, construction workers, nannies and caretakers who have been living and working here for years and contributing to our society. They deserve to be treated with compassion, dignity and respect. They deserve a pathway to citizenship.

Trump’s new immigration rules allow any undocumented person to be deported for any reason Families will be torn apart and innocent people, including children, will suffer.

Please write to your representatives and senators and tell them you disagree with Trump’s immigration policies. Tell them to withhold any funding that Trump requests to hire new ICE officers and to build a wall. Tell them you want them to be fiscally conservative on this issue and not approve any increases in spending.

Doing this is meaningful and will make a difference and may even prevent an innocent life or two from being destroyed.
