Breen's 31 sparks CWNC girls, 51-45

Sam Breen scored 31 points and the Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic girls basketball team survived a scare with a 51-45 win over Central Valley in the WPIAL 4A quarterfinals Thursday night.

The Trojanettes, the defending PIAA champion, led by 11 at the half with Breen scoring 16 points, but Central Valley stormed back to deadlock the game after three quarters.

North Catholic (21-2) was able to salt the game away in the fourth quarter.

The Trojanettes will play Beaver Monday at a site and time to be determined.

Boys Basketball

Isaac Thrasher scored 12 points as Grove City downed Farrell 52-34 to advance to the District 10 Class 4A semifinals.

Marcos Cintron and Logan Lutz each added 10 for the Eagles (18-4), who led 18-9 after the first quarter and 40-21 after three quarters.

It was the first playoff game between the two schools since 1933.

The win also clinched a spot in the PIAA playoffs for the Eagles.

Grove City will play Harbor Creek Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 55, Riverside 32 — The Trojans punched their ticket to the WPIAL 3A semifinals with this win.

North Catholic will play Washington Monday at a site and time to be determined.

Hockey

Freeport scored three first-period goals and cruised to a 9-3 victory over Greensburg Salem at Belmont Ice Complex.

Robbie Reichenbaugh tallied a hat trick and added four assists for the Yellowjackets, while Tanner Hill and Kyle Hazelett both scored twice.

Morgan Penn stopped 26 shots for Freeport (9-9), which will now prepare for the PIHL Class A playoffs.

Seneca Valley 1, Bethel Park 1 — Noah Watkiss scored just over five minutes into the game, but it was the only goal the Raiders managed in this tie with the Black Hawks at Bethel Park BladeRunners.

Adam Kruszewski scored the equalizer for the Black Hawks with 7:33 left in the game.

Dylan Sloat made 29 saves for the playoff-bound Raiders (10-8-2).

Canon-McMillan 4, Butler 1 — Jerome Oliver scored on a power play early in the second period to tie the game, but the Big Macs tallied the final three goals at Iceoplex.

Nick Farmerie (16) and Bryce Rearick (3) combined to make 19 saves for Butler (7-10-3), which will compete in the upcoming PIHL Class AAA playoffs.

Wrestling

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic sophomore Matthew Ferraro recently took sixth place at the WPIAL Class AA Championships. He became CWNC’s first WPIAL place-winner.

That effort earned him a spot in the Southwest Regional, which begins today at Indiana (Pa.) University.

Ferraro carries a season record of 23-4 into the event.

Private Schools

The First Baptist Christian girls basketball team dropped a 53-27 decision to Aquinas Academy in the first round of the playoffs.

Michaella Roth scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds while Lex Barnhart had 10 points, six rebounds and six blocked shots, Nicole Hartman four points and 10 rebounds.
