Motorist jumps off bridge to get away
NEW KENSINGTON — Police were searching for a motorist who sped away, got out of his car, then jumped off a bridge into the Allegheny River after police tried to pull over his car in Western Pennsylvania.
Police tried to stop the vehicle in Springdale Township, but the man drove away into neighboring East Deer Township and then onto the C.L. Schmitt Bridge into New Kensington. These communities are all about 20 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, along opposite sides of the river.
The man reportedly jumped into the river Thursday just before midnight, and police used rescue boats and summoned a dive team but could not find the man. He was seen swimming after entering the river, but Allegheny County police say today they don’t know if he survived or drowned.
The search was continuing.
