City officer fired for misconduct

A Butler City police sergeant was fired Thursday for misconduct.

Sgt. William Mayhugh, an anonymous source confirmed, was the officer terminated for misconduct in a motion passed by a 3-2 vote at the Butler City Council meeting at the city building.

Mayhugh, who is president of Fraternal Order of Police 32, said Friday that he intended to challenge the council’s decision.

“Without getting into specifics, I believe I acted within the scope of my authority and will be challenging the decision of mayor and council,” he said.”

Butler Police Chief Ron Brown had no comment.

Mayor Tom Donaldson called for the motion on Mayhugh, whom he referred to as “Butler City Police Officer Badge No. 1408,” for “misconduct and violation of policy.”

Donaldson and councilmen Kenny Bonus and Corey Roche voted in favor of the motion, while councilman Michael Walter and councilwoman Kathy Kline voted against it.

The decision followed a private executive session held by city council. None of the council members nor the mayor had any comment on the matter.

City solicitor Jim Coulter advised council immediately following the motion that the city’s labor employment attorney had asked him to inform council that the city’s collective bargaining agreement with the police union cites that “unless agreed to by the officer, the city shall not make any public comment on the reason for any disciplinary action brought against any officer except as required by law.”

Coulter said he expressed his opinion to council on the matter in the executive session that was held, but had no public comment.
