Police place motorist in handcuffs after crash

A man driving a Jeep that smashed into a utility pole on Hansen Avenue shortly before 1 p.m. was led away from the scene in handcuffs, a city firefighter said.

Little was immediately known about the events leading up to the single- vehicle accident this afternoon, which shut down a portion of the road between Pillow Street and Evergreen Road.

The road was shut down because the Jeep had partially sheared off a utility pole, which was hanging out across the road suspended by its wires. A utility crew reportedly was to shut down power to at least one business while workers replaced the pole.

Fire Captain Kevin McAfee said he saw the driver of the Jeep taken away in handcuffs.

Police on scene said the investigating officer was at the hospital with the driver of the Jeep. It was not immediately clear if the man was injured in the crash.
