Pioneers repeat as WPCC champs

BC3 women top Westmoreland

BUTLER TWP — When Westmoreland made a push, Kalynn Callihan pushed back.

With authority.

The Butler graduate and Butler County Community College sophomore drained treys on consecutive possessions late in the third quarter — turning a six-point lead into a 12-point margin Saturday evening at the BC3 Field House.

Those buckets propelled the Pioneers to a 69-60 women’s basketball victory over Westmoreland County Community College and their second consecutive WPCC championship.

“Callihan’s three’s broke the dam. No doubt about that,” BC3 coach Dick Hartung said.

The visiting Wolfpack (16-8) lost twice to the Pioneers — 73-59 and 79-48 — during the regular season, but pulled within 43-37 when Baylee Riggle stuck back an offensive rebound with 1:51 left in the third quarter.

But Callihan’s two treys upped the count to 49-37 with 56 seconds left in the quarter. The Pioneer lead ballooned to as many as 19 early in the fourth and Westmoreland CCC didn’t get within single digits again until the game’s final seconds.

Butler graduate Julia Baxter scored 20 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked six shots for BC3. Guard Christina Davis, a Ford City product, had 22 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

Callihan contributed 12 points.

“Baxter and Davis are Division II caliber players and when you have two players who can play at that level in this league, they’re going to be hard to stop,” Wolfpack coach Gene Brisbane said.

“Our plan wasn’t to limit Baxter and Davis as much as it was to stop everybody else. But when you have someone hitting three’s, also, that can be a difference maker.”

Rachel Garris paced Westmoreland CCC with 14 points.

The Pioneers (16-8) have won seven straight games and will be the No. 2 seed at the Region XX Tournament this weekend at Montgomery-Rockville (Md.).

“Our girls found themselves when we went down to that tournament last year. We’re going to have to find ourselves again,” Hartung said.

Baxter, Davis and Callihan all made the All-WPCC team. Hartung was named WPCC Coach of the Year.

“You can’t win coach of the year without good players. And I have good players,” Hartung said.

“Westmoreland has a good team. They can shoot the ball and any time you have good shooters, you have a chance to win.

The BC3 men ended their season at 10-19 earlier Saturday when they lost at top-seeded CCAC in the WPCC semifinals. The Pioneers defeated Pitt-Titusville 100-74 in the first round at home on Friday.

Brandon Record had 22 points and six assists in Friday’s win while Garret McHenry had 20 points and 13 rebounds, Chris McConnell; 16 points, Jake Anderson 16 points and 10 rebounds, Justice Lewandowski 10 points.

McHenry took 41 charges this year, setting a Pioneer career record in just one season.
