Shamrock Shuffle preps for 9th run in Harmony

Hundreds of runners race through the streets of Harmony in the 8th annual Shamrock Shuffle in March 2016. The event raised more than $20,000, most of which went to the Zelienople Rotary Club.

HARMONY — The ninth annual Shamrock Shuffle makes its return March 18 and aims to benefit the Zelienople Rotary Club.

“It's become super popular,” race organizer Joella Baker said. “We have people who come in from about 15 different states, which is great.”

This year's shuffle will include a half marathon that is being called “one of the toughest” in the tri-state area.

Racers will start in downtown Harmony and travel in a loop around the area before heading onto Evergreen Road. From there, they race onto Textor School Road to the top of the hill and then go back toward town.

“Textor School Road has two really steep climbs,” Baker said.

At the top of the hill, racers can enjoy additional challenges such as keg stands and Jell-O shots. Water stations are another highlight of this race and the green beer will continue to flow into the finish.

A 5K and one-mile race will also be held. Athletes can participate in all three races if they so choose.

The half marathon will start at 7:30 a.m., the 5K will begin at 10 a.m. and one-mile race will start at 10:45 a.m. Awards will be given around 11:15 a.m.

Finisher medals will be given for all three races and each runner will receive a loaf of gourmet cinnamon swirl bread. Beer glasses will also be given for awards. Food will be served afterward.

Baker said 615 participants were at last year's shuffle, which raised more than $20,000 in gross revenue. About $13,000 of that went to the Rotary Club.

She said she hopes to have between 600 and 650 people participate.

“A lot of people come to visit the town,” Baker said. “People are definitely finding out more about the town and hopefully come to visit afterward.”
