Vo-tech students shine at SkillsUSA competition

ADAMS TWP — Two Mars High School students who attend Butler County Vocational-Technical School earned awards in the 2017 SkillsUSA “Champions at Work” District 10 Competition, held Jan. 13 at New Castle School of Trade.

Sabrina Shick, a senior cosmetology student, earned a silver medal in the extemporaneous speaking contest. Travis Rychorcewicz, a senior building construction student, received a bronze medal in the masonry contest.

The students were selected by their vo-tech teachers based on their performance in their fields. They competed against students from other District 10 career and technical education centers.

The SkillsUSA competition reinforces the field-related skills that students are learning in the classroom as well as their leadership prowess.

The county vo-tech offers courses in air conditioning/heating, auto mechanics, building construction, carpentry, collision repair, commercial arts, computer networking & telecommunications, cosmetology, culinary arts/baking, graphic arts, health careers, heavy equipment repair, machine technology, protective services, and welding.

The Mars, Butler, Karns City, Moniteau, Seneca Valley, Slippery Rock Area and South Butler County school districts are participating members of the Butler County Vo-Tech School. All courses are open to high school students in grades 10 to 12 at member school districts.
