KC's Hegedus nets 24 points in Gremlin win

Emily Hegedus scored 24 points and also had seven steals as the Karns City girls basketball team opened up a big halftime lead and cruised to a 64-46 win over Redbank Valley Thursday night.

Alyssa Gibson scored 19 points to go with five assists.

Mackenzie Craig added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Gremlins (17-5), who led 25-11 after the first quarter and 40-24 at the half.

Karns City will play Moniteau for the District 9 championship next week on a day and at a site and time to be determined.

Grove City 37, Strong Vincent 29 — Hannah Santom scored 17 points and also had 10 rebounds to lead the Eagles in this regular-season finale.

Abby Fulkerson pitched in nine points and five assists and Halle Culmer had seven steals for Grove City (9-13), which will travel to Warren to play the Dragons (17-5) in the opening round of the District 10 3A playoffs at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The winner will play Slippery Rock Feb. 25.

Bowling

Ashley McCue rolled a 526 series as the Butler girls bowling team placed fourth at the WPIBL Championships at Hillview Lanes in Greensburg.

Mercedes Belch added a 517 series.

Butler tallied 2,372 in thge tourney. Abby Kyle had the high game for the Golden Tornado at 203.

Hempfield won the championship with a 2-0 win over Plum. Mars finished ninth with 2,072.

Hockey

Tyler Murphy scored a hat trick as Seneca Valley defeated Pine-Richland, 6-3, Thursday night at the Baierl Ice Complex.

Zach Broskey, ChrisLipnicky and Giovanni Sarachine also scored for the Raiders. Dylan Sloat made 20 saves as SV enjoyed a 31-23 advantage in shots on goal.

Kyle Whittingham scored a pair of goals for Pine-Richland.

Upper St. Clair 6, Butler 3 — The Golden Tornado led 3-2 after two periods, but surrendered four goals in the final 17 minutes at Ice Castle.

Sam Gross and Josh McGowan scored first-period goals for Butler. Jerome Oliver added a goal in the second.

Elliot Stevenson scored three goals for Upper St. Clair.
