Butler Township PoliceThursday — Police charged two men with illegally trying to buy guns in October at the Dick’s Sporting Goods store at Greenwood Plaza.Gordon A. Brown, 44, of Butler and Philip C. Fleck III, 53, of Prospect both face felony and misdemeanors charges.Brown on Oct. 4 and Fleck on Oct. 8 falsely answered questions on their applications to buy the guns. Brown, police said, is barred from possessing firearms due to a prior conviction from a domestic-related incident.Fleck is not permitted to buy a firearm because he currently has an arrest warrant out for him in Colorado. Authorities in Colorado, however, have declined to extradite him.Both suspects are charged with unlawfully attempting to buy a firearm, a felony, and unsworn falsification to authorities, a misdemeanor.

Butler County DetectivesWednesday — Detectives charged a Butler County Prison inmate with breaking off a sprinkler head, which allowed his cell to flood with water Jan. 31Prison staff told investigators that Charles W. Burgess Jr., 23, of Butler committed the vandalism “at the urging of other inmates,” according to court documents.Authorities said after the sprinkler head was severed, the water to the prison’s fire suppression system had to be shut off, “causing the entire system to be inoperable,” documents said, thereby placing all inmates and employees in danger.The vandalism caused $148.50 in damage.Burgess is charged with institutional vandalism and reckless endangerment, both misdemeanors.Only two weeks before that incident, authorities said, Burgess allegedly spit in the face of a correctional officer during a disturbance in his cell Jan. 17.He is charged in that case with aggravated harassment by a prisoner, a felony, and is awaiting trial.Burgess has been in the prison since Oct. 21, having first served a sentence in a felony shoplifting case, officials said. But while serving time, documents said, he was charged with falsely accusing two other inmates Nov. 28 of forcing him to perform sex acts on them.In that incident, he is charged with unsworn falsification to authorities and false reports to law enforcement authorities. That case also is pending in court.

State Police, ButlerThursday — Police obtained a felony arrest warrant for Azza M. Gaines, 37, of Chicora stemming from a Feb. 1 shoplifting incident at the Giant Eagle store at Clearview Mall in Center Township.Gaines, who has at least three prior shoplifting convictions, is charged with a felony count of retail theft. She also is charged with false identification to law enforcement authorities, harassment and disorderly conduct.8:30 p.m. Sunday — Chad A. Zinkhann, 40, of Butler Township was more than 3½ times the legal limit for alcohol when he was arrested for drunken driving in Butler Township, police said.Police stopped Zinkhann shortly after he pulled out of a parking lot at a local bar on New Castle Road. He was pulled over at Hansen Avenue and Peterson Street for crossing the center line “multiple times,” according to court documents.The suspect, who appeared to be impaired, was unable to perform field sobriety tests because of his intoxicated condition, police said.A breath test later showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.305 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.Zinkhann was arraigned on charges of driving under the influence disregarding traffic lanes, careless driving, reckless driving and not wearing a seat belt. He was released on $2,500 unsecured bail following arraignment.7:10 p.m. Saturday — Laura J. Walter, 33, of Cherry Township was arrested for drunken driving after she crashed her sport utility vehicle on Eau Claire Road just east of Black Road in Marion Township.Police said they found Walter sitting in the SUV. There was a “strong odor” of alcohol coming from her and she had a difficult time getting out of the vehicle and standing, according to court documents.She was taken to the barracks in Butler Township, and needed assistance walking up the front steps. A breath test showed her blood-alcohol level was 0.279 percent, or more than triple the state’s legal limit.In addition to DUI, Walter is charged with disregarding traffic lanes and careless driving.Feb. 9 — Police charged Susan M. Stephenson, 62, of Slippery Rock with drunken driving stemming from a Feb. 6 traffic stop in the area of Main and East Cooper streets.Troopers said they smelled a “strong odor” of alcohol coming from the suspect and they noticed empty beer bottles on the front passenger seat. She told police that she was coming from a Super Bowl party in Butler, but she denied having consumed any alcohol.When asked about the empty beer bottles, according to court documents, she claimed she “was not sure how they got there.”Stephenson eventually was taken to the Slippery Rock University police station for a breath test. The findings indicated her blood-alcohol level was 0.134 percent, police said.In addition to DUI, she is charged with careless driving, failing to keep right, failing to use turn signals, driving without valid inspection and driving with open containers of alcohol.

State Police, ClarionFeb. 4 — A Parker man’s hip and finger were broken during a fracas at the Pines Inn on East Main Street in St. Petersburg. Police said Bobby G. Tasker, 44, of Knox is accused of pulling the 46-year-old victim out of his chair and throwing him to the floor.Tasker faces assault charges, according to a police report.

State Police, PunxsutawneyWednesday — The state police Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement cited Cooper Station on Route 356 in Winfield Township for allegedly violating the state liquor law between Dec. 4 and Jan. 17 by failing to have its board-approved manager complete a Responsible Alcohol Management Program.An administrative law judge will hear the case.
