Butler woman charged with insurance fraud

A Butler woman was arrested this week in a suspected “crash and buy” insurance scam.

Amy L. Allaman, 36, is accused of buying an auto insurance policy several weeks after her car wrecked into a mobile home at a Connoquenessing Township trailer park last year. She subsequently filed a fraudulent claim of more than $2,000, authorities said.

The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office on Monday charged Allaman with felony insurance fraud and a misdemeanor count of attempted theft by deception.

According to court documents, the defendant was delivering newspapers March 9 when she got out of her car at the trailer park. The car accidentally rolled down a hill and struck a home, causing about $2,000 in damage to the trailer.

Allaman had insurance but when she filed a claim it was denied April 14 because she was using the vehicle for business purposes. The Safe Auto Insurance policy she had, authorities said, only covered her car for personal use.

She purchased a Nationwide Insurance policy on April 28, investigators said, and on May 13 submitted an identical claim for the mobile home crash.

But in filing the claim, documents said, Allaman “stated she was visiting her cousin in the trailer home park, and not delivering newspapers.”

She remains free on her own recognizance while awaiting a preliminary hearing March 13 at the office of District Judge William Fullerton in Butler.
