Police: Butler man used forged checks to fund gambling spree

A Butler man admitted he cashed more than $10,000 in forged checks to support his gambling addiction, authorities said.

City police on Monday charged 40-year-old Kory E. Guynup with a pair of felonies in the investigation that began Jan. 25 when his mother showed up at the station to reported his alleged crimes.

Guynup's mother, Jacqueline Barkman, told investigators that her son had been writing checks to himself from the account of her friend, for whom she has power of attorney, according to court documents.

Barkman also provided police with documents, including copies of checks that implicated her son.

She even recounted his confession to her after she confronted him about what she had uncovered.

Police allege that between Dec. 1 and 28, Guynup forged 13 checks that he cashed for $10,425.

Detective Nathan Shulik on Friday interviewed the defendant at the station. He told Shulik that he “wanted to be honest” about what happened, documents said.

He claimed he has bipolar disorder and suffers from depression.

“Guynup also stated he suffers from a gambling problem and this is where the money went,” Shulik said in his affidavit.

Most of the money, the defendant recalled, was gambled away at the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh.

His arraignment on felony counts of forgery and theft is pending.
