Rockets snare 30-point victory

SR drubs Meadville 64-34 in hoop finale

SLIPPERY ROCK — One by one, the eight seniors on the Slippery Rock girls basketball team climbed a ladder and took a snip of the net.

The nylon will be a cherished possession for them.

Last week Slippery Rock clinched the District 10, Region 5 championship and closed out the league season Monday at home on Senior Night with a 64-34 drubbing of Meadville.

The Rockets (17-4, 11-1) shared the region title last year with Hickory. This year, they won it outright.

“It feels good to be able to call it just ours,” said senior guard and team captain Bailey Boyd.

The seniors have been playing together for a long time, some of them for 10 years.

Winning a league title was always their goal and they were able to achieve it this season under first-year coach Amber Osborn, who was with them as an assistant coach for the last three seasons.

“I’m really going to miss them,” Osborn said. “They’re the type of group — they just get it. I always call them a different breed. You give them a day off, but they want to be in the gym. School’s canceled because of snow, but they go to the rec center to shoot.

“They’re not normal,” Osborn said, smiling. “But it’s a good not normal.”

All seven seniors who played against Meadville scored. The eighth, JoElla Neal, is injured.

Julia Steele and Hannah Willison each had big games for the Rockets.

Steele scored eight points and also had three rebounds and three steals and Willison scored six and 10 Slippery Rock players scored at lead one points.

Senior Sedona Campbell led the Rockets with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Boyd added 10.

Steele and Willison were both in the starting lineup as Slippery Rock jumped out to a 12-4 lead.

The Rockets led 32-12 at the half.

“They’re the reason why we’ve been playing so well because of what they do in practice,” Osborn said of Steele and Willison. “They’re just as important as any of the starters. They’ve put just as much time in the program as anybody.”

Osborn was substituting liberally against Meadville (3-18, 1-11).

Senior Step Croll also scored nine points, senior Jenna Whitmer eight and senior Elena McDermott six.

McDermott had a special moment with her younger sister, Emma, a sophomore who was lost to an ACL injury in mid-season.

The younger McDermott presented her older sister with flowers as part of Senior Night and the two hugged with Elena shedding a tear.

“It just stinks because I’m not going to be able to play with her again,” Elena said. “I had a little bit of time with her. She’s my best friend and my sister. It just stinks.”

Elena McDermott, though, said she is thrilled with the region title.

She worked her way up from a bench player to a key starter for the Rockets.

“I started from the bottom and worked my way up,” she said. “I’ve played with these seniors for, I don’t even know how long, and it feels so good to win it.”

Slippery Rock won’t open the District 10 playoffs until Feb. 25. The Rockets will get a first-round bye.

The Rockets have two scrimmages scheduled to stay sharp.

McDermott said the goal is to have another celebration at the end of the district playoffs.

“I want to win districts,” she said, smiling. “I think we can do it. We just have to keep working hard. There’s some good teams out there and we have to be better.”
