Rocket girls net Region 5 crown

Sedona Campbell scored 16 points and added 12 rebounds as the Slippery Rock girls basketball team traveled to Edinboro and toppled General McLane 49-36 Thursday night to clinch the Region 5 championship.

“To me, Sedona probably played her best game of the season tonight,” said first-year Slippery Rock coach Amber Osborn. “She’s had more points, but her hustle and effort — she was all over the place — really, really gave us a boost.

Slippery Rock (15-4, 10-1) fell behind 8-2 early, but rallied to take a 24-19 lead at the half.

The Rockets got some breathing room with a 15-8 advantage in the third quarter.

“General McLane has improved a lot,” Osborn said. “It was a scary game for us to go up to there place.”

Steph Croll added 11 points, Jenna Whitmer 10 and Macy McCall eight for the Rockets.

Campbell, who was 8-of-11 from the free throw line, also had four assists and McCall had five steals for Slippery Rock.

The Rockets had only six turnovers in the win.

Capturing the region title was a goal from the first day Osborn got the head coaching job when John Tabisz stepped down.

Osborn served as an assistant coach under Tabisz.

“I feel like with this group of seniors and the talent they had, we needed to set the bar high,” Osborn said.

Slippery Rock will host Indiana Saturday and then Meadville on Monday on senior night.

Conneaut 42, Grove City 21 — Abby Fulkerson scored 10 points and Hannah Santom added nine in the Eagles’ loss.

Grove City is now 8-12 overall and 4-7 in the region.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 75, Knoch 34 — The Trojanettes wrapped up an undefeated section season with this win.

Cardinal Wuerl is now 19-2 overall and finished the section schedule 12-0.

Knoch is 6-15 and 4-8.

Cardinal Wuerl will host Mars Monday. Knoch will travel to play Avonworth, also Monday night.
