Rocket girls clinch share of region title

No Slippery Rock player scored in double digits, but the Rocket defense was superb against visiting Hickory in a 34-27 defeat of the Hornets in high school girls basketball play Monday.

The win clinches for the Rockets (14-4, 9-1) at least a share of the District 10-Region 5 championship.

Macy McCall, Jenna Whitmer and Steph Croll each scored seven points in the victory. McCall added eight rebounds and four steals.

The game was tied at 24 entering the fourth quarter, but the Rockets won the period by a score of 10-3.

Mars 72, Franklin Regional 47 — Tai Johnson led a trio of Mars players who scored in double figures by sinking 23 points as the Planets crushed the host Panthers.

Lauren Wasylson added 22 points and Nicole McCloud 15 for the Planets (15-5, 9-2).

Highlands 69, Knoch 63 (3OT) — Gabby Fennell scored 19 points, but the Knights were unable to stay with the visiting Golden Rams.

Emily Fraser added 13 points for Knoch (6-14, 4-7), Carly Burdett had 12 points and Kayla Grafton 11.

The game was tied at 44 at the end of regulation.

Burrell 56, Freeport 28 — Following a promising first quarter, the Yellowjackets hit a wall, scoring just 16 combined points over the final three periods.

Freeport (13-8, 8-4) was led by Sidney Shemanski’s eight points.

Swimming

Knoch’s Aryanna Napora scored a 216.14 in the diving event as Knoch’s girls thumped Riverside, 57-34.

In the boys meet, Knoch’s quartet of John Wilson, Braden Zukowski, Matt Karenbauer and Derek Ekas won the 200 medley relay with a time of one minute, 48.5 seconds, in a 53-42 win.

Hockey

Five different players scored for Mars as the Planets defeated Bishop Canevin, 6-4, in a rematch of last year’s PIHL Class AA title game.

Noah Raymundo scored twice and William Scurci added one goal and three assists in the victory.

Also scoring for Mars (6-9-2) were Braden Hanna, Keaton Hanna and Hunter Reimer.

Reimer tallied two assists and Tyler Spreng stopped 26 shots.
