Thefts were in 3 counties

CRANBERRY TWP — A Lawrence County man faces a plethora of charges after allegedly going on a burglary spree.

Daniel C. Leasher, 30, of Volant faces 10 felony charges and two dozen misdemeanor charges in connection with a spree of burglaries that occurred last year from July through August.

Leasher and an accomplice, Christopher M. Friedman of Zelienople, allegedly stole about $4,500 worth of copper from Shipley Plumbing in Cranberry Township. The missing copper was reported to township police on Aug. 17.

The two also allegedly stole about $7,000 worth of catalytic converters in early August from Meyers Tires in Zelienople.

Video evidence shows the duo trying to sell the converters to D & D Auto Salvage and the copper to AAA Scrap Iron & Metal, both Allegheny County stores.

Police said Friedman confessed to both instances on Aug. 25, including his involvement with Leasher.

Charges were filed against Leasher in the township last week.

Leasher also allegedly stole various items from numerous homes in the area.

He was arrested by state police on the evening of Aug. 18 after his vehicle was found at a residence on Tollgate School Road in Jackson Township.

Police reports state Leasher was possibly in the act of committing another burglary. An officer called Leasher’s phone and told him to exit the home, which the latter did without incident.

Leasher was arrested possessing a “large amount” of heroin, police said, and a “large amount” of stolen property was found inside the home. Township Police Chief Terry Seilhamer previously said he had about 20 stamp bags of heroin.

Leasher confessed to stealing or attempting to steal from 18 homes in the township, according to police reports.

“According to Leasher he stated that he began breaking into structures shortly after his father kicked him out of his residence at the end of June or early July of 2016,” police reports state.

However, police reports state Leasher was being investigated as far back as April 2016.

State police could not be reached for comment.

Police reports state Leasher tried stealing about $4,000 worth of copper plumbing from a Tollgate School Road home.

He also allegedly stole jewelry, coins and a Marlin .22-caliber rifle from a Cranberry Township home on Leatherback Drive.

Other various items stolen from homes in Butler, Fayette and Allegheny counties include gas cans, golf clubs, fishing lures, air compressors, tools, a weed eater and a chain saw.

Leasher faces 10 felony charges, including four counts of theft, four counts of receiving stolen property, one count of burglary and one count of criminal conspiracy.

He also faces 24 misdemeanor charges, including 12 counts of theft and 12 counts of receiving stolen property.

Leasher’s preliminary hearing for his alleged crimes in Cranberry Township will be in District Judge David Kovach’s office on Feb. 24 at 10 a.m.

He had a preliminary hearing last August at District Judge Wayne Seibel’s office and was arraigned in county court in October for his alleged crimes in Jackson Township.
