Fire destroys mobile home near Venango-Butler County line.

IRWIN TWP, Venango County — A couple escaped a burning mobile home with their one-year-old baby Thursday night just over the Butler County line, authorities said.

No one was hurt but the trailer and belongings were destroyed. The owners and occupants, Devin and Kaitlyn Dolan, had no insurance.

“They dropped it a week ago because they couldn't afford it,” said Gerry Rea, chief of the Clintonville Volunteer Fire Department.

The fire on Barkey Hoffman Road apparently started about 8:15 p.m. in the dryer while Kaitlyn Dolan was doing a load of laundry, according to investigators.

She told her husband but by the time he got to the small room housing the dryer, flames were already shooting out.

“They panicked and just got out,” Rea said.

They called 911 and took their baby to the nearby home where Kaitlyn's grandmother lives.

Rea was first on scene and noticed smoke around the edge of the roof of the singlewide trailer with an addition, about two miles north of Butler County.

He grabbed a fire extinguisher, hoping to make quick work of the blaze. But he abandoned his plan when he got to the door.

“There was a glow inside the whole house,” he said.

He radioed for more engines and tankers and advised it was a “fully involved” fire.

Moments later, the fire made its way outside

“It came through the side of the house where the dryer was,” Rea said, “and the windows started popping.”

Additional manpower with trucks, engines and tankers from three counties began to arrive.

An attack crew armed with a hose line went into the home. Firefighters were concerned the blaze could spread to a detached two-stall garage just eight feet from the house.

“The guys did a great job getting (the fire) out,” Rea said. “There was no damage to the garage, not even the siding.”

The fire was out about 9:40 p.m. But crews had to return about midnight when lingering hot spots ignited the traditional roof that was installed over the trailer's metal roof.

A damage estimate was not immediately available. State police are investigating but a report was not available this morning.

Assisting the Clintonville VFD were firefighters from Marion Township and Harrisville in Butler County, Emlenton in Venango County and Pine Township and Grove City in Mercer County.

Red Cross officials were called to assist the Dolans. The family, officials said, are staying with relatives.
