Elementary PTO at Mars donates $25K

It will buy iPads, laptops

ADAMS TWP — A $25,000 donation by the Mars Elementary Parent-Teacher Organization will buy 85 electronic devices for the district’s young students.

The primary center, which educates students in kindergarten and first grade, will receive 20 iPads. The elementary school, which houses students in grades two, three and four, will get 40 iPads that will be placed on carts.

The Centennial School’s fifth- and sixth-graders will have access to 25 HP convertible laptops thanks to the donation.

“This special additional contribution was made possible through the generous support (that) the PTO has received from Mars Area families in fundraising efforts over the past few years,” said Amy Riggio, Mars Elementary PTO treasurer.

According to a district statement, the PTO holds several fundraisers each school year, including the annual “March for Mars” walkathon, candy, spirit wear and yearbook sales, and the holiday stores at each elementary building.

PTO members coordinate several activities for students each year, including parties, field trips, field days, book fairs, a talent show, sixth-grade graduation, science fairs and teacher appreciation luncheons at all three elementary buildings.

The PTO also provides funding for school activities and assemblies like the annual Author Days held at the elementary school.

A teacher support fund supported by the PTO gives up to $100 to teachers for their classroom or students.

The PTO also made a recent donation of $2,875 toward the purchase of banners, pencils, wristbands and staff T-shirts for the district’s “We Are Mars!” positive behavior program.

Other donations made by the PTO include:

$5,333 for a pottery kiln and musical instruments at the primary center

$5,333 for a horizontal climbing wall at the elementary school

$4,496 for new risers in the Centennial School’s music department

Funding for recess equipment and sixth-grade team-building activities at the Centennial School

Funding for an incubator for a second-grade classroom at the elementary school

District families interested in getting involved in the Mars Elementary PTO can attend the group’s next meeting, which will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 2 at the middle school or at 9:30 a.m. on March 7 at the Centennial School.
