Woman, 33, dies of suspected overdose

A 33-year-old woman died Sunday evening of a suspected heroin-related overdose at her Butler home, authorities said.

Laci Ann McCandless was unresponsive when medical crews arrived at the home in the 300 block of Mitchell Avenue. Butler County Deputy Coroner Larry Barr later pronounced her dead at the scene.

An autopsy was planned today, but a cause of death would likely not be known until toxicology reports are completed following lab tests.

McCandless’ live-in boyfriend called 911 at 6:22 p.m. when he discovered her on the basement floor. He said she was not breathing and was changing color.

Butler police Deputy Chief David Adam said the boyfriend was instructed to start cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures. But McCandless never regained consciousness.

Police later arrived and seized a syringe, cooking spoon and two empty stamp bags of suspected heroin. The bags were labeled “Money Bags” and also marked with a picture of a bag of money.

Adam said the investigation continues.

The Butler Fire Department and Butler Ambulance Service were also called.
