Butler girls press way to road win

Tornado pick up 55-38 victory over McDowell in Erie

The Butler girls basketball team set out to get more possessions in a non-section game against McDowell on the road Friday night.

The Golden Tornado pressed and played up-tempo and got off to a hot start to beat the Trojans 55-38.

“We pressed more than we've pressed all season,” said Butler coach Joe Lewandowski. “It was a tough road game and it was big for us to get off to a good start.”

Butler (9-5) jumped out to a 15-5 lead after the first quarter and led 32-16 at the half.

Jenna Kunst led the Golden Tornado with 16 points and Kylee Lewandowski added 14.

Butler hit nine 3-pointers in the game, seven in the first half.

Kylee Lewandowski hit four of them.

It was a well-balanced win for Butler. Mia Rader scored nine points on three 3-pointers and also had four assists and Julia Gibson added seven points and eight rebounds.

“We limited their second-chance points and getting off to that fast start was huge,” Coach Lewandowski said.

Butler will host North Hills Monday.

A-C Valley 65, North Clarion 64 — Olivia Boocks was fouled at the buzzer on a 3-point attempt with the score tied at 64-64 and sank the first free throw in a big win for the Falcons.

Boocks didn't attempt the other two free throws.

Ellie Thompson led the way for the Falcons (7-4) with 19 points and six steals.

Kylee Eaton added 15 points and nine rebounds and Boocks scored 13.

North Clarion (12-2) was led by Tori Obenrader, who scored 41 points.

Karns City 49, Beaver Falls 38 — Emily Hegedus recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Gremlins (9-5).

Mackenzie Craig added 13 for Karns City.

Moniteau 76, Clarion-Limestone 19 — Alazia Greaves scored 26 points and Kristina DeMatteis added 16 to lead the Warriors to this rout.

Emma Bair added 10 rebounds for Moniteau.

Union 48, Clarion 43 — Lexey Shick scored 27 points in this win for the Damsels.

Frankee Remmick added 13 rebounds for Union.

Boys Basketball

Patrick Uher scored 16 points — 12 in the second half — as Seneca Valley won a big section matchup on the road at Central Catholic, 47-37.

Both teams started out ice cold from the floor. The Raiders were 1-of-9 shooting in the first quarter and the Vikings were 2-of-6 and led 4-2.

Seneca Valley (8-7, 3-4) won this game at the free throw line, going 20-of-29 in the game and 18-of-27 in the second half.

Central was just 10-of-17 from the stripe, 7-of-14 in the final two quarters.

Uher was 10-of-13 from the line for Seneca Valley.

Luke Nedrow led the Vikings (6-7, 2-5) with 14 points.

Karns City 59, Venango Catholic 30 — Ian McElroy scored 19 points as the Gremlins rolled.

Jacob Friel pitched in 10 points, Chandler Turner 12 rebounds and Noah Pollock seven assists for Karns City (11-4), which jumped out to a 23-2 lead at the end of the first.

The win clinched a playoff spot for the Gremlins.

Grove City 58, Oil City 27 — Martin Beatty scored 17 points and Isaac Thrasher added 14 as the Eagles rolled in this region game.

Grove City (10-4, 7-0) led 27-9 at the half.

Freeport 53, Valley 38 — Evan Schaffhauser scored 21 points as the Yellowjackets rallied in the second half for the win.

Ben Beale added 13 points and Kevin Lynch 11 for Freeport.

The two teams played to a 21-21 deadlock in the first half, but the Yellowjackets outscored Valley 32-17 in the final two quarters.

Clarion-Limestone 81, Moniteau 71 —Lake Pry scored 35 points and also had 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough in this KSAC loss.

Jared Lominski scored 12 points and Jake Jewart added 11 for the Warriors.

Pry scored 20 of his points in the first half.

Farrell 66, Slippery Rock 49 — Rod Williams scored 15 points to lead the Rockets.

Jeannette 82, Summit Academy 50 — Tyree Thomas scored 14 points to lead the Knights.
