Family's home damaged by fire

CLEARFIELD TWP — Two adults and five children were left without a place to stay Thursday night after a fire damaged their home.

A mother and two young children fled their house on Carbon Center Road when they saw smoke coming from the master bathroom on the first floor. No one was injured.

The fire was reported to Butler County Emergency Services at 6:07 p.m., and when firefighters arrived, the bathroom was up in flames, said East Butler Fire Chief Kevin Hesidenz.

He said they got the fire under control in about five minutes, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the two-story brick house.

Hesidenz estimated the damage to the house to be $50,000.

“The bathroom is totally destroyed and there is smoke damage in the rest of the house,” he said.

Though firefighters identified a space heater in the bathroom as a possible source, a state police fire marshal was on the way to the scene Thursday night to investigate the cause.

Firefighters stayed on scene for more than two hours to clean up and clear the house of smoke.

Red Cross was notified about the incident and the family was making plans to stay somewhere else.

The East Butler Volunteer Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Chicora and Herman fire departments.
