Butler Police6:25 p.m. Monday — An unknown man is suspected of firing a gun into the air after he was caught trying to break into vehicles on Spruce Street in the city’s Institute Hill neighborhood.A neighbor was on his porch when he saw the suspect, dressed in a black hooded sweat shirt, dark pants and light brown boots, look into a van parked across the street, and flash a light into the vehicle, police said.The neighbor, a 47-year-old man, yelled at the suspect, who walked around the corner at Spruce and Second streets. The neighbor also alerted the owner of the van, a 34-year-old woman.Moments later, the neighbor and woman both heard a gunshot. Police were notified and officers searched the area but they could not find the suspect. The officers came upon a couple who were walking in the area and they, too, reported hearing a gunshot.Police did not find any spent shell casing. No one reported having their vehicles broken into in that area.4:18 p.m. Jan. 11 — Joshua A. Krovak, 26, of Slippery Rock was hurt when the pickup truck he was driving collided with a car at South Cliff and East Cunningham streets. He was wearing a seat belt and suffered an apparent minor injury.Police cited Krovak for a stop sign violation. Cybil H. Popovich, 42, of Butler Township was the other driver.

Butler Twp Police1:30 a.m. Saturday — Debra L. Koedel, 42, of Prospect was caught with suspected marijuana and drug contraband during a traffic stop at the Route 422 off-ramp and Route 8. Koedel, a passenger in the vehicle, is charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Grove City PoliceTuesday — Amanda L. Karwowski, 24, was charged with allowing a 2-year-old child in her care to leave her home last week in the 300 block of South Center Street unsupervised.Police said their investigation began Jan. 11 when they got a call for a young child wandering outside in the area of South Center Street and College Avenue. They later learned that the child had left the home after the suspect had fallen asleep. The child was unharmed.Karwowski is charged with child endangerment.Monday — An unknown thief filled his vehicle’s gas tank at the Country Fair store on West Main Street and drove away without paying. The suspect is described as a white man in his mid-20s. He was driving a silver Honda Civic, which was last seen traveling south on South Center Street.Anyone with information is asked to call police at 724-458-7925.

State Police, ButlerTuesday — Kevin M. Moravek, 35, of Slippery Rock was charged with being more than four times the legal limit for alcohol last week when his vehicle became disabled on Interstate 79 in Worth Township.Police about 6 a.m. Jan. 9 found Moravek outside the vehicle, which had a tire blown out. He reeked of alcohol, according to court documents. He told troopers that the last drink he had was two hours ago.Police subsequently arrested Moravek after he failed field sobriety tests. He was taken to the barracks for a breath test, which showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.348 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.In addition to driving under the influence, he is charged with disregarding traffic lanes, careless driving, failing to notify police of an accident or damage to his vehicle, and failing to use his hazard lights.Tuesday — Police charged Tariq A. Miller, 18, of Pittsburgh with drugged driving stemming from a three-vehicle crash last month in Slippery Rock Township.Miller is accused of causing the wreck just before 6 p.m. Dec. 7 when he turned in front of an oncoming vehicle at Branchton and Harmony roads. No injuries were reported.Troopers believed he was impaired and he eventually was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test. Toxicology reports later showed he had marijuana in his system, court documents said.Miller is charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, driving on the wrong side of the road, disregarding traffic lanes, making an improper left turn and failing to yield.3:56 p.m. Monday — Gary W. Watt, 61, of Boyers lost control of his car after traveling over an ice patch and crashed into an embankment on Route 58 just west of Jamison Road in Venango Township. Watt, who was wearing a seat belt, was not hurt but his car had to be towed.A police report noted that PennDOT was later notified with a request for a crew to salt the road.4:26 a.m. Sunday — Tori M. McCommon, 20, of Butler was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence after a one-vehicle crash on Unionville Road, just east of Brown Road in Center Township.

State Police, ClarionMonday — Police charged Gary Cooper, 27, for violating the state’s dog law by not keeping his dog leashed at his home on Route 68 in Toby Township. The dog ran out of the yard and was nearly struck by a vehicle.Cooper is charged with not confining the dog.

State Police, Mercer12:10 p.m. Tuesday — A Grove City man was the apparent target of a money transfer scam. An unknown suspect called the man and asked that he transfer money. In return, the caller promised to send the man a larger amount of money.The would-be victim eventually caught onto the scam, police said, and halted the money transfer.Tuesday — An unknown identity thief made a fraudulent purchase at a Best Buy store in Minnesota using the credit card information belonging to a 32-year-old man from Jackson Township, Mercer County. Police said the case of access device fraud remains under investigation.12:50 p.m. Sunday — A car driven by Travis C. Vertrees, 22, of Grove City rear-ended a sport utility vehicle on Route 58 near East Pew Road in Findley Township. No one was injured but the car had to be towed.Police cited Vertrees for following too closely to another vehicle. Samantha L. Felix, 21, of Grove City was the other driver.
