Police: Mother gave son pills

She faces 2 felony charges

CRANBERRY TWP — Police say a township woman endangered her child's safety after allegedly giving him antidepressant pills.

Danielle L. Powell, 27, Friday waived felony charges of drug possession and endangering the welfare of children after an incident last month involving her 10-year-old son.

According to the police report, an anonymous tipster contacted ChildLine after being in contact with Powell. Powell told the tipster that she administered to her son an unknown dosage of trazodone during the night of Nov. 28, 2016, according to the police report.

“Powell reportedly administered this narcotic as a method of calming John Doe after he was fighting with his siblings,” the report states.

Police met with administrators, educators and medical personnel at Rowan Elementary School.

Four people were interviewed by police on Dec. 2, each of whom said the student arrived late to school on Nov. 29 and “did not act normally.”

“According to each of the four people interviewed, John Doe appeared tired, lethargic, completely zoned-out, unable to concentrate and unaware of his surroundings,” the report states.

The student's pupils were also said to have been “extremely dilated” throughout the day.

He also complained of exhaustion, hunger and headaches, and eventually slept at the nurse's office for more than half an hour, according to the police report.

The report further states that he told a medical professional at the school that his mother, Powell, “gives him a white pill at nighttime to sleep.”

Trazodone is a Class IV narcotic used as an antidepressant medication to treat major depressive disorders.

It is not available without a prescription and is not administered to people under the age of 18 without a doctor's approval. Pediatric use is not approved by the FDA.

The anonymous tipster informed police that Powell said she obtained the medication from a prescription issued to her boyfriend, according to the police report.

Powell's home on Route 19 was searched by police. They found a prescription bottle filled with 51 complete trazodone pills and six partial pills, according to authorities.

A Butler County Children and Youth Services caseworker and a professional service provider spoke with Powell about the incident.

“Powell admitted to both of these people that she has administered trazodone to John Doe to help him sleep more than once,” the report states.

Powell was released on her own recognizance. She will be arraigned in county court on Feb. 21.
