Butler hockey snares key win

Ben Rodgers scored twice to pace Butler’s hockey team in a crucial 5-2 victory over Canon-McMillan at Ice Connection Monday night.

The win ties the Golden Tornado (6-8-1) with Pine-Richland for seventh place in PIHL Class AAA. The top eight teams will qualify for the playoffs.

Garet Banner, Taite Dusheck and Jerome Oliver Jr. each added a goal for Butler while Nick Farmerie had 19 saves.

Central Catholic 4, Seneca Valley 3 — The Raiders gave up three goals in the first period in this loss to the Class AAA-leading Vikings.

Giovanni Sarachine, Nicholas Raible and Tyler Murphy all scored one goal for Seneca Valley (8-7-1).

Penn-Trafford 5, Mars 2 — Keaton Hanna and Hunter Reimer both scored in the first period to give the Planets a 2-1 lead, but Penn-Trafford scored the game’s final four goals in this Class AA meeting.

Tyler Spreng stopped 35 shots in net for Mars (4-8-1).

Senior guard Elena McDermott scored 10 points and tallied four steals in Slippery Rock’s 58-30 home victory over General McLane.

Jenna Whitmer and Steph Croll both scored 11 points for the Rockets (10-1), with Whitmer sinking three treys.

Hampton 43, Mars 36 — The Planets (9-5, 4-2) dropped this key section showdown with the host Talbots (12-1, 6-0).

Bella Pelaia scored 12 points to lead Mars, which trailed 15-6 after one quarter. Tai Johnson added 10 points.

Freeport 56, Kiski Area 37 — Jenna Manke dropped 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Yellowjackets led 54-17 after three quarters.

Sidney Shemanski added 15 points for Freeport (9-5), which is riding a four-game winning streak.

Grove City 46, Conneaut Area 27 — Hannah Santom scored 19 points and also had 10 rebounds as the Eagles rolled.

Abby Biddle added 16 points for Grove City.

CW North Catholic 70, Knoch 29 — The Trojanettes (12-1, 6-0) remained unbeaten in section play with this road win.

Knoch dropped to 4-9 overall and 2-4 in the section.

Knoch snapped a four-game losing streak, knocking off host Indiana, 75-58, in a non-section affair.

Five players scored in double figures for the Knights (7-6), led by Austin Hannes’ 18 points.

Devin Campbell added 15 points in the win, followed by Mac Christy (13), Jackson McKee (11) and P.J. Gourley (10).

Summit Academy 79, Yough 25 — Coby Jaggon scored a game-high 20 points as the host Knights blasted the Cougars.

Tyree Thomas added 14 points for Summit (4-8).
