Man stabbed during a children's birthday party

A man was stabbed Saturday afternoon during a children's birthday party at a Butler Township bowling alley, authorities said.

Township police arrested Austin Dale Young, 21, of Connoquenessing Township on felony assault and other charges in the alleged attack. He's in the Butler County Prison on $100,000 bail.

Dillon Mayberry, 25, of Butler suffered two stab wounds to his lower left leg. He was treated at Butler Memorial Hospital.

The violent altercation occurred about 3 p.m. after Mayberry confronted Young over money the defendant owed the victim, according to court documents.

Both men were at Bon Aire Bowl at the Bon Aire Plaza where they were attending a 5-year-old's birthday party.

While there, Mayberry and Young got into an argument about the money but separated, police said. They resumed bowling without any further problems.

But at some point Young's mother arrived. Her son, who is related to the party's host, told her about the earlier argument with Mayberry, police said.

The defendant's mother confronted Mayberry, a friend of the host, and advised him to leave "if he can't get along with Young," documents said.

The victim and his girlfriend, who were with their infant child, decided to leave. But before he could get out the door, Mayberry passed Young and the two again started to argue.

Young told police, documents said, that Mayberry punched him in the face "a couple of times."

According to Mayberry's account, the fight happened when he saw Young with his hand near his hip and he thought the suspect had a knife.

The two men ended on the floor with Mayberry on top of the defendant, who started stabbing the victim, documents said.

Mayberry's girlfriend recounted that she saw the knife, police said, and yelled, "Knife. He's got a knife."

Young admitted he was afraid, pulled out his knife and stabbed Mayberry.

Several others attending the party intervened and broke up the fight. Mayberry left and went to the hospital.

Police described the victim's knife wounds as "several inches in length."

One cut was on the outside of the lower thigh and the other was to the outside of the knee.

Medical staff alerted police once Mayberry showed up at the hospital. Officers then went to the bowling alley, where they found the suspect.

District Judge Lewis Stoughton arraigned Young on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and harassment.
