Planet wrestlers grab tourney titles

Mars' Alex Hornfeck and Jake Richardson both took first place at the Midwestern Athletic Conference Wrestling Tournament, held Friday and Saturday at Hopewell High School.

Hornfeck defeated Quaker Valley's John Rocco Kazalas by a 9-0 major decision in the 126-pound final.

Richardson prevailed in a 2-0 decision against Moon's Nick Acuna to win the 138-pound bracket.

Both efforts helped Mars finish fifth out of 15 teams.

Following are the Planets who placed at the event.

1st place: Alex Hornfeck (126 pounds), Jake Richardson (138); 2nd: Nolan Wicker (120); 3rd: Aidan Leshinsky (132); 4th: Max Aubrecht (220); 5th: Sean McElhinny (160), Isaiah Johnson (182), Nick Schriver (195); 6th: Noah Hunkele (106); 7th: Nathan Gribble (285); 8th: Alex Chen (113).

Competitive Spirit

Karns City won the District 9 medium-division title Saturday at DuBois Area High School.

The Gremlins advance to the state championship event, scheduled for Jan. 20-21 in Hershey.

Also moving on is A-C Valley, which placed second behind Elk County Catholic in the small division.

Indoor Track and Field

Butler's girls earned three first-place finishes at the Tri-State Track Coaches Association Meet at Edinboro University.

Chelsey Kabel and Maggie Welty teamed with Erin LeMay and Mariah Geibel to take the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 10:36.08.

Kabel and Welty were also on the winning distance medley relay (14:35.48), along with Maegan Emanuel and Carly Bauer.

Individually, Alexis Leech won the 400 dash with a time of 1:00.83.

At a meet held at Slippery Rock University, Taylor Weaver won the pole vault at 10 feet and Liz Rakers the shot put at 32-1.

Slippery Rock's Ryan Putorti broke his own school record in the boys 60 dash, running a 7.67 at a meet hosted by Youngstown State University.

Sierra Nagy bettered her school record in the girls long jump with a third-place finish of 16-5.

Also on the girls side, Brady Dalton finished fourth in the 60 hurdles (9.75) and Kayla Latoza placed fourth in the triple jump (30-10.5).

Boys Basketball

Karns City dismantled visiting West Shamokin, defeating the Wolves 60-38.

Noah Pollock scored 13 points for the Gremlins (8-3) and Ian McElroy had 11 points and dished out six assists.

Eric Dodd contributed 11 points and Chandler Turner had 12 rebounds.

Private Schools

Alexis Barnhart had 14 points and 10 rebounds, but the First Baptist Christian girls basketball team fell 29-23 to Cornerstone.

Michaella Roth scored seven points and had eight steals while teammate Nicole Hartman snagged nine rebounds.
