Sheriff: Beware of phone scam

Butler County Sheriff Mike Slupe warns residents about the pending return of a phone scam.

Slupe said the scammers claim to be calling from a county sheriff’s office wanting money, gift cards or personal information because there is a warrant for their arrest for failing to appear for jury duty.

He said the scam artists ask for cash, MoneyPak prepaid cards and iTunes gift cards as payment to avoid arrest.

According to Slupe, the caller also may ask for personal information, including bank account numbers.

The caller may use the false pseudonym of Lt. Frank Rogers.

“We’ve had them in the past,” Slupe said about the scam. He said this scam has arisen again in the eastern and central parts of the state.

He stressed his office does not request money over the phone for any reason, so he wanted people forewarned.

“Empowering the people just to hang up,” Slupe said.

County court administration handles the jury selection process.

Tom Holman, deputy court administrator, said the court also would not request any money or information by phone.

“We will never ask for anything over the phone,” Holman said.

He said the only time prospective jurors are called is notification of the cancellation of a jury selection.
