Freeport girls get past Knoch

Freshman Sidney Shemanski scored 13 points as the Freeport girls basketball team jumped out on Knoch early and cruised to a 36-30 win Thursday night.

The Yellowjackets led 14-4 after the first quarter.

Knoch rallied to cut the lead to 27-26 at the end of the third quarter, but Freeport (6-5, 3-1) was able to extend the lead again and hung on for the victory.

Jenna Manke added nine points and nine rebounds for the Yellowjackets, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

Casey Kretzer and Emily Fraser each scored nine points for Knoch (3-7, 1-2).

Mars 62, Indiana 39 — The Planets bounced back from a disappointing loss to Plum Tuesday with a rousing region triumph.

Things started out slowly again for Mars (7-4, 2-1), however, which clung to a 20-17 lead at the half.

But Tai Johnson got things going in the second half as the Planets outscored Indiana 42-22. Johnson scored 15 of her game-high 24 points in the final two quarters.

Lauren Wasylson added 16 for Mars for the Planets, who will play another section game on the road Monday at Armstrong.

Grove City 67, Meadville 41 — Hannah Santom and Abby Fulkerson each posted career-high scoring games as the Eagles rolled.

Santom scored 31 points and also added nine rebounds as Grove City stormed out to a 36-23 lead at the half.

Fulkerson added 25 points for the Eagles.

Halle Culmer had five steals and Abby Biddle five assists for Grove City (5-5, 2-1).

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 70, Valley 7 — The Trojanettes (9-1, 4-0) rolled in this section matchup.

Hockey

Giovanni Sarachine and Matt Blazewick each scored goals for Seneca Valley, but the Raiders lost a heartbreaker to North Allegheny, 3-2, in overtime.

John Parks scored the game-winner for the Tigers two minutes into the extra period.

Seneca Valley (8-6-1) was out-shot 23-18.

Franklin Regional 5, Freeport 0 — The Yellowjackets managed just 12 shots on goal in this shutout loss against unbeaten Franklin Regional (12-0).

Greg Smith had 42 saves for Freeport (5-7).

Bowling

Joshua Rearick led Knoch with a 568 series and 199 game Wednesday, but the Knights dropped a 7-0 decision to North Allegheny. Chelsea Cimbala led the Knoch girls with a 181-487 in a 5-2 loss to the Tigers.
