Gilliland, Gross key Butler hockey win

Trevor Gilliland and Sam Gross both scored a pair of goals to lead Butler’s hockey team to a 7-2 win over Bethel Park at Ice Connection Monday night.

Gilliland’s second tally came in a third period that saw the Golden Tornado pull away with four goals.

Also scoring for Butler were Connor Bachman, Brandon Holt and Garet Banner.

Nick Farmerie made 19 saves in net for Butler (4-8-1).

Mars 10, West Allegheny 0 — Jared Taylor scored four times in this rout of the Indians.

Taylor’s first two goals helped the Planets (4-7-1) lead 2-0 after one period. They then exploded for five goals in the second.

Hunter Reimer contributed three assists in the win while Adam Musser and Nick Kiefer both had two.

Seneca Valley dropped its Section 1-6A opener, a 69-40 decision at Pine-Richland. No other details were available.

Butler sophomore Saavon Mosby took first place at the 220-pound weight class and the Golden Tornado finished fifth at the Southmoreland holiday tournament recently.

Mosby defeated Bishop McCoy, the No. 2-ranked heavyweight statewide in Class AA, 8-6 in the championship match.

“Saavon wrestled with effort and eagerness to push the pace,” Butler coach Scott Stoner said. “He went on the offensive to take the kid down in sudden victory overtime.

“He did everything right in this tournament. He wrestled solidly all the way through.”

Caleb Baxter placed second at 160 pounds, losing to Robbie Patrick of Ligonier Valley 6-0 in the title match.

Tornado wrestler Jack Codispot placed fourth at 126 while Scott Dietrich at 138, Isaiah Christy at 113 and Tommy Greaves at 195 all placed fifth.

Butler tallied 133 points to place fifth in the standings of the 32-team event. Greenville won it with 194.5 points, followed by Greensburg Salem, Norwin and West Allegheny.

The Tornado return to action Wednesday at Knoch.
