Shake-up effective for Tornado

Butler's bench provides early spark in team's 67-46 Sauer tourney triumph

FOX CHAPEL — Time to shake things up.

Butler coach Matt Clement juggled his personnel early in Wednesday’s game against Cumberland Valley, helping to set up a 67-46 boys basketball win in the Peter Sauer Memorial Tournament hosted by Shady Side Academy.

“We haven’t been playing all that well, so why not try something different,” Clement said. “Those guys gave us quality minutes early and got us off on the right foot.”

Those guys included Cade Negley, Ian McCarrier and Jason Gray. All three were in the game early and all three made an impact.

Negley canned a trey that knotted the game at 13 with 1:44 left in the first period. The bucket triggered a 14-0 Golden Tornado run that opened up a 24-13 lead.

Butler never trailed again.

McCarrier sank a pair of treys in the game and Gray produced four steals and four assists off the bench.

“I feel like my role is to come in there and help defensively, force turnovers and generate transition plays,” Gray said. “I think we did that in this game.”

Cumberland Valley (4-6), a Class 6A team from Mechanicsburg, suffered 20 turnovers in the contest.

“Way too many,” Eagles coach Mike Hibbs said. “Going into this game, I knew we couldn’t have more than 10 or 12. Turnovers have not been a problem for us.

“Butler made it a problem today.”

The Tornado regulars wound up playing key roles in the win as well. Tyler Frederick had 18 points and five rebounds while Ethan Morton produced 13 points, four assists and three steals.

Connor Ollio had nine points and six rebounds, Joel Stutz nine points and five boards.

“Things opened up inside for us because of our guard play,” Frederick said. “When they’re hitting shots from out there, our defenders have to go out there and help out.

“That leaves us open inside to do damage.”

Frederick struggled with foul trouble in Tuesday’s loss to Woodland Hills. He picked up his third foul in the third quarter Wednesday — and Clement left him on the floor.

“I had to give him a chance to learn how to handle foul trouble,” Clement said. “Those situations happen and we need him on the floor.”

Frederick agreed.

“I played it a lot smarter this time,” the senior said. “You can’t lose your aggressiveness, but you have to be wary. I learned something down here.”

Clement learned something as well — that he can trust his bench.

“We’re going to need those other guys,” the coach said. “When Jason Gray comes in, he can do so many things. When he gets involved in the offense, we’re awfully hard to beat.

“I gave some guys a chance to show what they can do today and they came through.”

Grey Hess had 15 points and five rebounds for Cumberland Valley. Matt Sunderland added 14 points and three assists, Josiah Burns five rebounds and four assists.

Hibbs was impressed with Butler.

“That’s a very good team. They’re as good as any team in our area,” Hibbs said. “That’s the best we’ve faced so far.”
