Veterans can apply for challenge program

PARKER — Central Electric Cooperative is looking for military veterans who enjoy challenging outdoor activities to be nominated as part of an annual program featuring vets from rural areas.

The program — No Barriers — sponsors events that mentally and physically challenge rural veterans on outdoor expeditions through mountaineering, rafting and rock climbing. Fifty veterans will participate in the 2017 program, which was cofounded by Erik Weihenmayer, an internationally-renowned mountain climber and the only blind person in history to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

The program, which began in 2003, will host events from June through September, according to its website. CEC said CoBank is covering the full cost, including travel expenses, for each veteran to attend this year.

Veterans must have VA disability ratings to qualify for the program, and should submit a letter summarizing their military background, length of service and why they wish to participate to codonnell@central.coop; or Central Electric Cooperative, 716 Route 368, P.O. Box 329, Parker, PA 16049. Submissions are due by Jan. 1.
