Requests made for band, choir

BUTLER TWP — The Butler School Board will explore ways to provide new choir robes and band uniforms at the request of the teachers, as discussed during an education committee meeting Monday night.

Jeff Kroner, the band director, previously had approached the board about buying new band uniforms for the 2017-18 school year, having received new Sequinettes uniforms this school year.

Kroner’s request was for between 250 and 280 uniforms that would cost the district roughly $130,000, according to Brian Slamecka, assistant superintendent for secondary education.

On Monday, choir teacher Bryan Helsel brought a request for new choir robes before the board.

Before the consolidation, the district’s 100 robes at the high school were sufficient, but with 10th grade students now in the choir, the district does not have enough, Helsel said.

The current robes also show signs of wear, since the set was bought in the 1999-2000 school year, Helsel said.

For 200 choir robes, the cost would be about $30,000, he said.

Al Vavro, chairman of the education committee, said funding will be the major issue.

Vavro said the board intends to buy band uniforms first, possibly for the 2017-18 school year, and choir robes after that, in a two-year window after the 2017-18 school year.

No action has been taken on either request, and Vavro said the board will discuss creative ways to fund the purchases.
