KC mulling crowdfunding rules

Guidelines would help teachers, staff

KARNS CITY — The Karns City School Board will work to develop new guidelines for teachers and staff who want to crowdfund for projects or purchases, according to the recommendation of the district administration.

The issue was discussed at a school board meeting Thursday night and aims to create a “consistent approach” on how to handle soliciting donations through websites or social media, said Superintendent Eric Ritzert.

While the administration devised procedures shared with the board Thursday, no formal policy will be in place for several months, Ritzert said.

Shane Spack, principal at Chicora Elementary School, said the issue arose when one teacher began crowdfunding for stability balls, or exercise balls used as student chairs in the classroom, but the insurance group recommended against that.

Ritzert said that donations are always welcome, but there must be some oversight in what those funds are used for.

“We need to make sure all of our staff are aware,” he said. “All of the donations we get are definitely needed and appreciated, but we need to make sure that we create something that’s in the best interests of the students and staff.”

The guidelines distributed to the board said the staff member should submit proposals to the principal and superintendent for approval.

The district also has highlighted reasons proposals could be denied to ensure crowdfunding projects are in line with the values and goals of the district, said Deana Turner, director of business affairs.

Reasons for denial include: requests for technology not compatible with current or future technology; requests for curriculum materials or supplies that are not standards-based; requests for materials that could be substituted by similar materials already provided by the district; requests to start a program that would require future funding beyond the crowdfunding; requests that put demands on staff members not involved; requests that subtract from adequate instructional time or established focuses of the district; requests for athletic equipment not consistent with or in conflict with existing athletic programs and is in conflict with current or planned curriculum initiatives, school policies, any collective bargaining agreements, general laws or regulations by department of education.

All gifts, bequests and contributions must be accepted by the school’s business office and will remain in the school where the project was at the time of the fundraiser.
