Hinrichsen true legend on track

One of Butler's all-time top runners joining HOF

This is the second in a series of four articles profiling the 2016 inductees into the Butler Area School District Athletic Hall of FameBUTLER TWP — Katie Butler was never afraid to try new things and with good reason. She excelled at most of them. Now married and with a 12-year daughter in seventh grade at Butler, the former track and field standout will be inducted into the Butler Area School District Athletic Hall of Fame during a ceremony at 5 p.m. Dec. 23 in the high school cafeteria.Katie Butler Hinrichsen is a 1999 Butler graduate and continues to hold the program’s female records in the 300-meter hurdles and 800 meters.“It’s pretty cool to see my name still up there after all this time,” Hinrichsen admitted. After leaving Butler, she went on to compete in track at Liberty University, where she tore ligaments in an ankle during her freshman year.Still, Hinrichsen went on to compete in the heptathlon in college — trying new things again.“I was accustomed to the running events and the hurdles,” she said. “I had never done the jumping or the throwing before. The javelin and shot put were new to me.“Trying new things was a way to push and challenge myself.”Hinrichsen was a member of the first Butler cross country team to qualify for the PIAA meet by finishing second as a unit in the WPIAL. She also played basketball for three years, foregoing her senior season to compete on Butler’s first varsity indoor track team.“I wasn’t going to college on a basketball scholarship,” she said with a chuckle. “I wanted to hone my track skills.”Hinrichsen was team captain of the Golden Tornado track team and MVP of the squad for three years. Her program-record time in the 300 hurdles is 43.9 seconds. Her record in the 800 is 2:14.94.She ran on Butler’s 4x400 meter and 4x800 meter relay teams that ran the second fastest times in school history at 3:56.44 and 9:18.90, respectively. And her 400-meter time of 56.34 seconds ranks fifth on Butler’s all-time list.Longtime Butler track coach Mike Seybert refers to Hinrichsen as “one of the top three or four athletes over the past 30 to 35 years here.”During her four years in the program, Butler racked up a dual meet record of 46-1, three WPIAL team championships and four section titles.“That’s one of the reasons I ran so many different events in high school,” Hinrichsen recalled. “Wherever we needed to score in a meet, the coaches would plug me in there.“I remember running the 1,600 meters against North Allegheny, winning that event and helping to beat them. I enjoyed the shorter races more, but teamwork like that helped us succeed.”Hinrichsen said she still uses the “strength of team” philosophy in her life today. After working as a nurse for seven-plus years at Presbyterian Hospital, she is now a clinical coordinator at the UPMC Lemieux Comple in Cranberrty Township.“I’ve always loved a team environment where you push each other,” she said. “I learned the benefits of that atmposhere through running track at Butler and I carry that with me today.”Hinrichsen is part of the seventh HOF induction class at Butler. The Hall’s membership will be at 52 following the Dec. 23 ceremony.“It’s nice to see my accomplishments recognized like this,” she said. “It’s a huge honor.”
