Cranberry man jailed in identity theft case

CRANBERRY TWP — A township man was arrested Saturday and charged with attempting to buy phones using a fake identification.

William M. Nyamekye, 26, of Old Station Road is charged with conspiracy, forgery, identity theft, retail theft and receiving stolen property, all felony charges.

Police were dispatched to the AT&T store on Route 19 around 10 a.m. Saturday, according to the criminal complaint.

Nyamekye allegedly was attempting to buy two iPhones, valued at $1,800. These phones were under an account belonging to Robert Griffith of Maryland; Nyamekye allegedly was using a fraudulent Maryland identification that identified him as “Robert Griffin.”

After searching his wallet, police say they also found two Idaho driver’s licenses, two Social Security cards, a U.S. resident card and two credit cards bearing various names.

Police contacted Robert Griffith who said he had not authorized anyone to buy phones using his account.

Nyamekye is in the Butler County Prison on $5,000 bail.
