KARNS CITY — What Megan McCartney lacks in height, she has made up for in hustle.

The diminutive 5-foot-1 star for the Karns City girls soccer team made a seamless position switch this season as a senior, moving from forward to midfielder.

Now in the center of the action, McCartney could show off her skills as both an offensive weapon and a defensive wall.

“Megan was the most dynamic player we had,” said Karns City girls soccer coach Tracy Dailey. “She is a consistent workhorse. She was in more of a defensive role for us. You can pretty much put Megan anywhere on the field and she can do well for you.”

Even as a midfielder this year, McCartney still recorded 34 goals and 20 assists and surpassed 100 career goals in October.

She was named the Butler Eagle Girls Soccer Player of the Year for the second consecutive year.

Mars' Tori Kopchak was also considered.

“Winning it once is great,” McCartney said. “Getting it again is even better.”

McCartney recently committed to Gannon University.

She said her size didn't hinder her much in the recruiting process.

“Yeah, it was a worry,” McCartney said. “But I made a lot of sacrifices. After everything I've done to help myself get better, I've shown I can do anything taller players can do.”

Even now, she's talking to her club coach, trying to get a workout routine together that will help her in college.

She also plans to put toe to soccer ball at every opportunity between now and when she leaves for Gannon in the summer.

“I plan on playing as much as possible — anything to stay on the field and stay in shape,” she said.

McCartney was also recruited by Edinboro, Slippery Rock University and Penn State-Behrend.

Gannon was always her first choice.

“I'm glad I'm going there,” McCartney said. “My older sister goes there. The team is all really fun and the team is going on a trip this year to play in South Africa.”

McCartney hopes to be on the field when they do.

“I feel like I could contribute right away to help the team,” she said.

She certainly helped Karns City in her career.

McCartney was a driving force last season behind the Gremlins' charge to the PIAA Class A semifinals.

This year, though, Karns City got tripped up in the state quarterfinals at Class AA in a loss to Freeport.

“It was a tough loss. We could have played better,” McCartney said. “We were off that day. We got to the semifinals last year and we really wanted to get back and go to the state championship game this year. It just didn't happen.”
