One person killed, two others injured in Rt. 8 crash

One person was killed and two others injured this morning in a four-vehicle, rush-hour crash that closed busy Route 8, authorities said.

Middlesex Township police are investigating the wreck shortly before 8 a.m. north of the intersection with Cruikshank Road.

Investigators said the road near the accident scene would be closed for most of the day while they reconstruct the accident.

Investigators believe a northbound tractor-trailer crossed over into opposing traffic north of the Lighthouse Foundation and caused the accident that also involved a Ford pickup truck and two cars.

An unidentified man driving one of the cars, a Honda Fit, was killed. His car ended up against a guardrail on the southbound side of the road.

Emergency crews covered the man's body with a tarp while they conducted their investigation, which included a team of state police accident reconstruction specialists.

The driver of the rig and the pickup suffered unknown injuries. They were taken by ambulance to an unknown hospital or hospitals.

It appeared that the tractor-trailer and the Honda collided head-on between Cruikshank Road and Old Route 8. That crash caused a second collision between the pickup and a Mercedes.

The pickup ended in the center turning lane and the Mercedes in the southbound lane.

The tractor-trailer traveled down an embankment off the west berm.

Police closed all five lanes immediately after the crash. Assisting were Penn Township police, Adam Township police the Butler County sheriff and volunteer firefighters from Middlesex, Penn and Saxonburg.

The road was wet from the steady rain but police said it was too soon to say if road conditions or speed were factors in the crash.
