Butler School District's tax collectors get pay increase

BUTLER TWP — Butler School District's tax collectors have received their first pay increase in 12 years, approved by the school board during Monday night's meeting.

The district has nine tax collectors, who were previously paid $2.25 for every tax card issued, according to Deborah Brandstetter, the district's director of business services. That rate has been increased to $3 per card. The collectors also receive compensation for per capita and interim taxes.

The district has more than 25,600 tax cards in Butler, Center, Clearfield, Connoquenessing, Oakland and Summit townships and Connoquenessing and East Butler boroughs, Brandstetter said. The city's tax cards, more than 10,400, are collected separately, through an agreement with the city and the district.

In the 2015-16 school year, the district's collectors received $62,000 in total compensation.

By increasing the rate to $3, the district will pay an additional $19,200 to the collectors in the 2018-19 school year, according to Brandstetter.

With only 423 properties in Connoquenessing Borough, the collector received around $1,000.

But a collector's compensation changes with the area. The collector for Butler Township, with 9,247 properties, received $20,800 in 2015-16.

Brandstetter also presented information about other district's tax collection to the board. The South Butler and Seneca Valley school districts pay $3.50 for every card collected, but Butler pays on all cards issued by the collector, she said.

Karns City School District has the highest rate per card at an average of $11.48. That district divides $78,200 total between the 13 collectors, Brandstetter said.

Moniteau School District uses a similar method: paying $64,000 total to eight collectors, an average of $9.75 per card.
