Powers' surge

Karns City's Kaiden Powers (19) breaks into the open field during the Gremlins' 54-36 football playoff win over Perry Traditional Academy Thursday night at Clarion's Memorial Stadium. Powers scored four touchdowns in the contest.
Karns City senior scores TDs 4 different ways as Gremlins cruise to 54-36 playoff victory

CLARION — He can run. He can catch. He can kick. He can cover.

He can score — in many different ways.

He is one of the smallest players on the field at 5-foot-6 and 145 pounds, but he delivers hits like a sledgehammer.

He may have never parallel parked a train, but Karns City wingback/cornerback/kicker Kaiden Powers may be the most interesting man on the football field.

Powers showed off his versatility against Perry Traditional Academy Thursday night at Clarion University in the District 8/9 subregional championship game.

Powers scored on offense, defense and on special teams in the Gremlins' 54-36 win.

It wasn't that close. Karns City led 41-6 at the half.

Powers had a big part of that, scoring on a 21-yard run in the first quarter and catching touchdown passes of 32 and 22 from Jacob King in the final 2:14 of the half.

Powers opened the second half with a 45-yard interception return and also kicked seven extra points in the win.

Powers scored 31 points by himself. It was a big game for the diminutive star.

“As always,” said Karns City coach Ed Conto.

Powers, the co-Butler Eagle Scoring Trophy champion, said the focus against Perry's offense was not giving the Commodores' receivers a free release off the line of scrimmage.

“The DBs really worked on their jams this week,” Powers said. “That was the big thing against Clearfield — we didn't jam very well.”

Karns City (9-2) slowed down the Perry passing game in the first half.

Of course, the Gremlins had 14 points on the board before Perry (4-7) ran an offensive play.

Karns City marched down the field on its initial drive, capped by a 3-yard scoring run by Aaron Hutchison.

Perry fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Karns City capitalized with the touchdown run by Powers.

Things got worse for the Commodores.

On Perry's first offensive play, Cullen Williams intercepted a pass from starting quarterback Doug Johnson to set the Gremlins up for another score, a 4-yard run by Chandler Turner.

Perry was determined to stop the run, loading the box with 10 players.

It didn't work.

“It was a good, solid first half,” Conto said. “They were putting a lot of pressure on us, bringing everybody and their mother up, and we were still able to run the ball. So that was good.”

Karns City rolled up 318 of its 347 yards in the first half. The Gremlins emptied the bench in the second half and ran only eight offensive plays with the running mercy clock.

Karns City ran just one offensive play in the third quarter, but scored two TDs — one on the Powers pick-six and the other on a 48-yard return by Jason Crowley on an onside kick.

Perry did score 30 second-half points, but all of those points came against Karns City's junior varsity team.

James Goodwine did have some success running against Karns City's first-team.

The big back rushed for 76 yards in the first two quarters and finished with 152 yards on 22 carries.

“We knew he was going to be (a handful),” Conto said. “He's big. He's fast. He's athletic. He's 6-2, 240 — he'd be a handful for anybody. Our first defense did a good job on him.”

King also had a big game for Karns City. He was 6-of-10 for 152 yards and three touchdowns.

“He threw the ball well,” Conto said. “The protection was good.”

Karns City will play the winner of the Sharon-Hickory District 10 3-A championship game in the first round of the state playoffs next week on a day and at a site and time to be determined.
