Slippery Rock falls in grid playoffs, 33-10

GREENVILLE — Chuck Carr's motor never shut off.

Hickory's senior running back carried 39 times for 228 yards and four touchdowns Saturday afternoon at Greenville High School. He set the all-time District 10 rushing record in the process as the Hornets defeated Slippery Rock, 33-10, in a Class AAA football semifinal playoff game.

“You know what they're going to do and you know where the ball's going,” Slippery Rock coach Larry Wendereusz said. “But you still have to bring him down.

“Every time we hit him, he still went forward. He never went backward. That's a special back.”

Carr scored on touchdown runs of 3, 15, 3 and 31 yards for the Hornets (10-0). He has rushed for 6,564 yards, unofficially, in his career, breaking the previous D-10 record of 6,548 held by Lakeview's Blake Reddick.

Carr has 1,998 yards rushing on the season.

“We didn't mean any disrespect by leaving Chuck in the game,” Hickory coach Bill Brest said. “But if he could get that record today, we wanted to get it out of the way.”

Carr entered the game needing 213 yards to set the mark.

Hickory built a 26-0 lead well into the third quarter before the Rockets (4-7) could get on the board. Seth Slater caught a screen pass and rambled 52 yards into the end zone with 1:23 left in the quarter.

After Carr's fourth touchdown, Nick Stutz booted a 32-yard field goal for Slippery Rock's other score.

Bailey Mertens passed for 161 yards for Slippery Rock, but the Rocket running game was limited to 69 yards on 32 carries.

“We knew it'd be tough to run on them,” Wendereusz said. “That's a good football team.”

Mertens was the Rockets' leading rusher with 39 yards on nine carries.

“Our goal was to be a better team at the end of the year than we were at the beginning. We definitely accomplished that.”

Hickory defeated Slippery Rock 45-21 during the regular season.

“They had a short field for a couple of their scores today,” Wendereusz said.

Carr's 31-yard scoring run capped a 44-yard drive in the fourth quarter. Troy Scurry blocked a Stutz punt to end the Rockets' first possession of the game. Carr's 3-yard TD run then capped a 20-yard scoring drive.

Slippery Rock's Jon Durban recovered a fumble to thwart a fourth-quarter Hickory drive.

Hickory lost senior starting quarterback Luke Brennan to injury in Week 8 of the regular season. Brennan is out for the year. Hayden Gallagher, a sophomore, has been playing behind center.

Gallagher completed five passes for 70 yards as Hickory generated 19 first downs.

“Hayden's done a good job managing the game,” Brest said. “I like how we're playing right now.

“You can see that Slippery Rock program turning the corner. Larry's doing a great job there. They have a lot to look forward to.”

The Rockets had won three of four games — including a 28-0 playoff upset of Mercyhurst Prep — before Saturday's season-ending loss.
