Target your gear to keep an eye on prize

Saw nothing. Got nothing.

After a day in the woods, it's frustrating to come home empty-handed. But with the latest hunting gadgets and gear, hunters can increase their chance of success.

“Anything that increases your hunting experience is worthwhile,” says Grant Williams, owner of Sportsman Supply, 245 Freeport Road.

Williams sells a variety of gear, but as an avid hunter himself, he also knows firsthand what works well.

Sportsman Supply doesn't sell trail cams, but Williams uses one of his own.

“It helps people to know they're hunting in an area where there's actually game,” he said.

He said the laser range finder is also a valuable tool. With “just the touch of a button,” hunters know the distance to their target.

Range finders vary in price, but if willing to spend $100 or $200, most hunters should be able to find an accurate, light-weight option that fits their needs.

Scopes, like the range finders, help hunters to take their best shot.

Sportsman Supply sells several brands, but Williams mentioned how the Vortex Optic offers an unconditional VIP warranty, which differs from a typical lifetime warranty.

“This company is doing something (to an extent that) no one else has done,” Williams said.

He explained that if someone's scope is defective or becomes damaged for whatever reason, he can exchange it for a new one that same day if there's one in stock. And even if it's not in stock, he can usually get one within a few days, as the company is very responsive in regards to customer service.

“Service drives the sales,” Williams said about the popular brand.

But if people want to reduce the risk of dropping their gun and eliminate the inconvenience of replacing a damaged scope or other equipment, they might consider using a performance stretch sling instead of a traditional leather one.

“Traditional leather is very decorative and attractive,” Williams said. “But we sell more performance stretch slings now.”

These slings make carrying guns more comfortable for hunters, especially those who are out and about all day with a gun slung over their shoulder.

“Because they stretch, they don't dig into your shoulder,” he said.

In recent years, reduced recoil ammunition has also become a popular request at Sportsman Supply.

“We are seeing younger people hunt,” Williams said. “[And] it makes it nice. They're not super afraid of it.”

Attractants and lures should not be overlooked.

“When I first started working here in the '70s, we didn't sell it, but now it's a staple,” Williams said.

Williams began working at Sportsman Supply in 1979 and has owned it since 1989. His father began the business in 1967.
