Fatal crash investigated

21-year-old dies in SR Township

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — State police are investigating a Tuesday evening crash that claimed the life of a 21-year-old man.

Austin Q. Walters of Slippery Rock was killed about 6:20 p.m. when the sport utility vehicle he was driving struck several trees along Crestview Road, authorities said.

Butler County Deputy Coroner Larry Barr pronounced Walters dead at the scene about 8 p.m.

An autopsy determined he died of “multiple blunt force trauma,” said Butler County Coroner William Young III. The manner of death is listed as “accidental.”

According to a police report, Walters was traveling south on Crestview Drive, approaching Taggert Road, when his 2011 Honda CRV went off the west side of the road and hit the trees.

The vehicle caught fire after the wreck. The fire soon spread to the trees.

Two neighbors saw the flames and ran out with fire extinguishers. The Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Department arrived a short time later and put out the blaze.

The police report said investigators are still trying to determine what caused the crash. Young said alcohol or drugs were not believed to be factors.

Trooper Matthew Stimmac, who is leading the police investigation, did not immediately return a telephone call this morning.

Walters, who attended Slippery Rock High School, is survived by his parents and two brothers.

The Young Funeral Home in Butler is handling funeral arrangements. An obituary appears on Page 6 of today’s paper.
