Mars, CWNC in finals

Boys soccer teams win in semifinal round of playoffs

Zane Mundy scored the winning goal with 4:51 left as Mars edged Thomas Jefferson 2-1 in the WPIAL Class AAA semifinals Saturday afternoon.

D.J. Carter got the Planets (16-3-1) on the board first with a goal in the 21st minute.

But Thomas Jefferson tied the score with 27:22 remaining in the match, setting up Mundy's heroics.

Mars will play Chartiers Valley (16-4) in the WPIAL Class AAA final at Highmark Stadium on a day and time to be determined.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 3, Seton-La Salle 0 — Braiden Willis, Joe Kearney and Nick Milas each scored a goal as the Trojans pulled off an upset of the defending WPIAL champion.

North Catholic (18-2-1) will play Sewickley Academy in the Class A title game at Highmark Stadium on a day and time to be determined.

Volleyball

Ashley Jackson continued her strong season with 11 kills and six blocks as Grove City swept Iroquois 25-13, 25-17, 25-22 in the first round of the District 10 Class AA playoffs.

Macguire Gubba added 11 assists and Khalidah Muhammad 10 kills for the Eagles, who will take on Harbor Creek in the quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Slippery Rock High School.

Football

Summit Academy closed the season with an offensive explosion.

Michael Chambers scored on runs of 12, 7 and 27 as the Knights routed playoff-bound Avella 50-0.

Summit Academy (3-6) led Avella (2-8) 44-0 after three quarters following a defensive touchdown by Malik Drew on an 11-yard fumble return.

Victor Casio, Coby Jaggon and Patrick Gaither also scored rushing touchdowns for Summit Academy.
