Woman waives charges of forgery

EVANS CITY — A Renfrew woman is accused of forging an elderly woman’s signature to draw money from her bank account.

Stacy L. Bastian, 44, last week waived to court 70 felony charges filed by Adams Township police.

During November and December of 2015, Bastian allegedly forged nine Dollar Bank checks, withdrawing a total of $1,739, according to the criminal complaint.

She allegedly made the checks out to herself and forged the signature of the victim, an Adams Township resident who spent some of the past year in the hospital.

In July, Bastian allegedly attempted to cash five more checks, but the bank alerted the victim, who then closed the account.

Police allege that Bastian also stole and used the victim’s debit card on 11 occasions during June and July, racking up $664 in charges.

The bank provided surveillance footage to the police that shows her in the bank’s drive-through allegedly withdrawing money from the victim’s account, according to the complaint.

She is charged with 16 counts of forgery, 15 counts of theft by unlawful taking, 15 counts of receiving stolen property, 12 counts of access device fraud and 12 counts of identity theft, all felonies.

She was arrested Oct. 14 and released from prison Oct. 18 on $1,500 bail after the amount was lowered by District Judge Wayne Seibel.

She has multiple retail theft convictions and was also arrested for shoplifting at Dollar General in Butler Township earlier this year.
