Nonprofits get more money

2nd Day of Giving far surpasses 1st

This year’s second Day of Giving raked in a lot more cash than the first.

The combined total raised by Butler County nonprofits and matching funds from the Endowment for Butler County during the two Day of Giving events is $184,475.

The Pittsburgh Foundation’s Day of Giving was held Sept. 21, and 52 Butler County nonprofits received donations for a total of $93,343. The Endowment for Butler County matched those donations with $23,366, bringing the Butler County Sept. 21 total to $116,709.

“We had no idea coming in whether it was going to be received well or not, because this is the second time around (this year), which is unprecedented,” said Amy Beiler, supervisor of the Endowment for Butler County.

“After our meeting where we make the decision, we had both the enthusiasm and the funds to match both May and September Days of Giving at 25 percent.”

The initial 2016 Day of Giving was held May 3, but technical difficulties with the event’s then-crowd-funding company, Kimbia, cut the day short.

Butler County nonprofits raised $54,808 on May 3, with the Endowment for Butler County providing $13,228 in matching funds for a total of $68,036.

The Butler County Association for the Blind amassed the most money raised by a Butler County nonprofit during the second event with $8,317 compiled across nine donations.

Out of all Butler County nonprofits, the Butler Area Public Library received the most donations on Sept. 21, with 43, for $5,232. The Butler County Humane Society was not far behind with $3,904 raised from 39 donations.

The two-day total of money raised, matched and prize money across Butler, Allegheny and Westmoreland counties is $5.9 million. The prize money is made up of incentives that were offered to Allegheny County nonprofits for raising funds.

“I can’t think of another community that cares as deeply and gives as much as Pittsburgh does,” said Maxwell King, CEO of the Pittsburgh Foundation. “The ingenuity and creativity that nonprofits demonstrated by raising more than $2 million in matching funds for Days of Giving far exceeded our expectations.”

The Pittsburgh Foundation’s first Day of Giving was in 2009.

Including the initial one, the events have raised more than $43 million for nonprofits.
