Late goal sends SV boys past Kiski

Happ, Dengler net goals in soccer playoff victory

The combination of Matt Happ and Cole Dengler was the difference for Seneca Valley's boys soccer team.

Happ assisted on Dengler's goal early on in Saturday's WPIAL Class 4A first-round playoff against Kiski Area at NexTier Stadium.

Then with the score knotted at 1-1, Dengler returned the favor, setting up Happ's game-winning goal in the 76th minute of play as the Raiders advanced with a 2-1 victory.

Kiski Area (8-8-3) was limited to just four shots in the game. The Cavaliers scored only on a penalty kick in the 30th minute.

It was the first goal allowed by the Raiders and goalkeeper Dylan Good in 12 games.

“Our defense played another great game,” said SV coach George Williams. “There was a 20-mile-per-hour wind and that equalized the game quite a bit. Kiski did a better job of dealing with it.

“We weren't happy with giving up the goal, but it's the playoffs and you can't expect to not allow any goals.”

The Raiders (16-0-1), who were No. 1 in Pennsylvania and No. 19 in the country in the latest rankings released by www.maxpreps.com, will face a familiar foe in Wednesday's quarterfinal — Canon-McMillan (11-7).

Last year, the Big Macs dashed SV's WPIAL title hopes by defeating the Raiders 1-0 in the semifinals. But 12 days later, SV avenged the defeat by ending Canon-McMillan's season with a 1-0 decision in the state quarterfinals.

“It's going to be a tough game, but we'll be up for it,” said Williams.

C.W. North Catholic 3, Brentwood 0 — Joe Kearney scored twice for the Trojans and Justin Koenig had one goal in this WPIAL Class A first-round playoff win at North Allegheny's Newman Stadium.

Nathan Paras earned the shutout with three saves.

CWNC (16-2-1) will meet Eden Christian, a 3-1 victor over St. Joseph, in a quarterfinal Wednesday at a site and time to be determined.

Chartiers Valley 3, Knoch 0 — The Knights (8-9-2) saw their season end with a loss in a WPIAL Class AAA first-round playoff.

Katie Santamaria and Olivia Bonvenuto both scored for the Trojanettes (5-13) in a 2-1 WPIAL Class A preliminary-round victory against Apollo-Ridge at North Allegheny.

Lena Clerici was the winning goalkeeper.

CWNC will face Bentworth in a first-round playoff today at Upper St. Clair.

Villa Maria Academy 2, Karns City 0 — The Gremlins (17-1) sustained their first defeat of the season to the District 10 power Victors, last year's PIAA Class AA champions.
