Butler sandwich shop burglarized

A Butler sandwich shop’s security system was stolen during an overnight burglary, city police said.

The crook apparently used an unlocked window to enter the Hoagie Shop in the 100 block of North McKean Street, according to owner Travis Frenchak, who discovered the break-in shortly before 5 a.m.

Butler police Deputy Chief David Adam said authorities have a “person of interest” in the investigation but he declined to elaborate.

Stolen from the store were two security cameras, a modem and digital video recorder, as well as an Apple iPad computer tablet and assorted food items.

Frenchak estimated the value of the stolen property at $1,000.

He said it appeared the burglar, once inside, took the time to cut all the zip ties that fastened the security system’s wires to pipes in the store.

“I can only assume who ever did this was looking to take electronics,” Frenchak said.

The case coincidentally is similar to one at the same sandwich shop two years ago. In the July 2014 break-in, a burglar stole a security camera and DVR.

Police quickly arrested the suspect, Kenneth Tyson, who was caught with the stolen goods he had stuffed in a gym bag.

Tyson, 58, formerly of Butler, was charged with a top count of burglary but he subsequently pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of trespass.

He was sentenced to serve 16 to 32 months in prison.

“It’s just part of doing business,” Frenchak said, referring to the crimes. “I’m just glad no one was hurt. It could have been worse.”

He noted that his other Hoagie Shop on New Castle Road in Butler Township was targeted by armed robbers in August 2014.

No one was hurt in the holdup but the robbers forced two employees to lie on the floor while they stole money.

Four suspects were arrested and eventually convicted in that crime.
