Knights celebrate with shutout

Knoch defeats Ambridge, 48-0

AMBRIDGE — Knoch football coach Mike King didn't have much to celebrate about coming into Friday night.

However, he joined the Knoch marching band and cheerleaders in postgame festivities after his Knights shut out Ambridge, 48-0.

“I'm just glad we got to see our kids play well,” King said with a smile.

The Knights' offense was led by senior running back Jayden Renfrew, who found the end zone five times on 11 carries.

“I just wanted to go out there and play my hardest,” said Renfrew, who ran for 222 yards. “I'm pretty happy about it.”

Knoch (2-6, 2-5) struck early on their opening drive. Renfrew found open holes for a 37-yard gain on the second play of the drive to the Ambridge 13-yard line. A couple plays later, he punched the ball into the endzone on a 1-yard rush to give the Knights a 7-0 lead.

He showed his speed later in the first quarter.

After Knoch intercepted Bridgers quarterback Noah Campalong, Renfrew outran defenders en route to a 54-yard touchdown run on the third play of the drive.

Renfrew would score again in the second quarter with an 8-yard run and twice in the third quarter with runs of 42 and 36 yards, respectively.

“That kid worked harder than anyone else in practice,” King said of Renfrew. “He's one of the smallest guys on the field, but he plays with a big heart.”

Renfrew said he credits the offensive line and the wide receivers for their blocking.

“I'm glad we got the win,” he said. “It's one of our last games of the season.”

Knights quarterback Mac Christy also had a successful night on both sides of the ball.

With 8:05 left in the second quarter, he found senior tight end Zach Boldy in the end zone for a six-yard touchdown pass to put Knoch up 21-0 over the Bridgers.

He also ran the ball 11 times for 86 yards.

With 46 seconds left in the third quarter, he returned an interception from Campalong for 40 yards to the end zone to give the Knights a 48-0 lead.

“He's one of our key guys,” King said. “He did very well and came up big with that defensive touchdown.”

Ambridge's final home game of the season was full of the same woes the team has faced all year.

The Bridgers had seven fumbles throughout the night, losing one in the third quarter.

Ambridge (0-8, 0-8) drove down field to the Knights' 26-yard line late in the first quarter. However, Campalong under threw the football into Boldy's hands for the interception, which led to Renfrew's second touchdown.

The Bridgers had another chance to score late in the second quarter after capitalizing on three Knoch penalties. However, they were stopped at the Knights' 7-yard line and missed a 24-yard field goal attempt.

The Bridgers have five shutout losses after Friday night.
